Planning

Before traveling to the photography site, it is important to plan carefully to be as efficient as possible during the shoot.

  1. Check weather forecasts for the location. Be sure the weather is cooperative for the kinds of photos you need, and that you bring along any gear necessary to protect your equipment.
    1. In high winds, you may wish to bring extra cases to keep all your equipment sheltered and organized.
    2. In rain, you may wish to bring plastic tarps to cover your equipment.
    3. In bright sunlight, you may wish to bring some kind of opaque covering to make viewing images easier on your camera's viewfinder or your laptop's screen.
  2. Decide the time of day that you will be onsite. Usually mid-morning or mid-afternoon (depending on which will offer better frontal illumination for your site and subjects) offer the best lighting situation for outdoor photography. Light in the earlier morning or later afternoon often offers too much contrast, and light at noon usually doesn't offer enough depth.
  3. Obtain any necessary permissions or permits. Determine what organization or individual(s) are responsible for the locations in which you will be shooting and obtain any necessary permissions or permits that may be required. If your photos will be including people, note that release forms signed by those photographed may be necessary. Know the legal requirements for the state in which you will be shooting.
