Project Context: Overview

It is important to give the visualization expert a good understanding of the project background to help him or her understand the important aspects of the project environment and their context, particularly from the perspective of the public or other targeted audience of the visualization. This will help him or her determine what to highlight or de-emphasize and the appropriate level of detail to include in the visualization. It may also assist in a decision regarding appropriate visualization tools and technologies to use.

In general, the discussion will center on the issues that are currently being addressed in the project that affect or otherwise relate to the purpose and content of the visualization. These will vary according to:

  1. the phase of development your project or plan is in
  2. the types of decisions that are on the table, and
  3. any specific issues that are arising in public discussions or the media regarding your project that can or should be clarified or addressed through the use of visualization.
