Visualization Context: Objectives for Engagement

  1. What does the agency want to achieve with the visualization?
What is it exactly that the visualization is trying to do? What information needs to be conveyed? This is where information about the project and the audience is particularly useful as the visualization professional and technical team discuss the best tools available for conveying the information in question.
  2. Should the visualization facilitate interaction?
Will the visualization be used in an interactive setting designed to solicit input and information from the public? In such a case, the visualization should provide enough information to help provide an informed decision / reaction from the participants and in a format that is easily manipulated with immediate visual results.
  3. What format will the visualization be presented in?
Will the visualization be presented on a board or in a presentation in which the public or audience can ask questions? In such a case, it allows for some flexibility in details shown that can be clarified verbally by the presenter. In cases in which the visualization is in a document, publication, or website in which people view it independently, it's important to be sure that the information desired to be conveyed is clear.
